Passing the Torch of Life
By Dennis Murphy
August, 2008

The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing are now history. But for me, the most special and amazing athletic competitions of my life were held much closer to home.

Over the weekend of July 12-14, 2008, I attended the 2008 U.S. Transplant Games in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where organ transplant patients of every type – kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas and bone marrow – competed in sporting events from track and field to swimming, basketball and golf.

Unlike the Beijing Olympics, the purpose of the 2008 U.S. Transplant Games doesn’t lie in the heart of the competition; rather, it lies in the heart of donating a life. The fact is that 18 people die every day waiting for organs because there just aren’t enough organ donors to meet the need. We really want people to think about organ donation as a way of passing on a very important legacy and giving others a second chance at life.

The 2008 U.S. Transplant Games were attended by 1,400 recipient athletes, 1,500 donor family members, about 1,200 living donors and at least 4,000 spectators and supporters.

To see so many people celebrating the fact that they have either given or been given a second chance at life was totally amazing. I found myself going up to people I didn’t know when I saw their “Donor Family” badge and just saying, “Thank you!”

The Transplant Games are far more than just an athletic competition. They are a celebration of life for both the organ recipients as well as the organ donors and their families.

I want to personally thank Transitions International and its members for supporting us in this all-important work.

Dennis Murphy is One of Us.
June, 2008

Dennis Murphy, owner of HairQuarrters in Surfside Beach, South Carolina, has been in the Hair Restoration profession for more than 20 years, wears hair himself, and enjoys helping people like yourself who have hair loss.

Dennis, as a Transitions International member, cares about his clients, as do all Transitions Members. They want you to look great and enjoy life every day, with hair.

It all started a few years ago after a routine physical. Although he wasn’t sick and he had no symptoms, doctors determined he had primary liver cancer. Dennis’ only hope for survival was a liver transplant and he was put on a transplant waiting list. All Dennis could do was wait.

People can stay on a transplant waiting list for months, even years. About 17 people die every day waiting for their transplants. After a year of testing, Dennis was put on a waiting list.

But miraculously, Dennis received a life-saving call just five weeks later. A match had been found.

The procedure was completed in June 2006. Dennis’ recovery has been what he calls “textbook perfect.”

Since his transplant, Dennis has made it his goal to be an advocate for organ donation whenever possible. In July of this year, Dennis will participate in his first U.S. Transplant Games in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These games will include more than 8,000 recipient athletes, donor families and spectators.

All 65 Transitions International members are happier than you can imagine about Dennis’ survival and amazing recovery, and we are proud to support him in his involvement in the Transplant Games. Every single Transitions member has made a donation to support the games and Dennis’ participation in them. The donations go directly to transplant recipients and donor families to help pay ongoing expenses.

SHARE OUR ENTHUSIASM for this great cause by following Dennis’ adventure through future updates that will be displayed here. And if you would like to contribute, contact the sponsor of the U.S. Transplant Games, the National Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org. Just click on the link to the “U.S. Transplant Games.”
